The New Paper (Singapore) called Sebastian Liew ‘The Medicine Man’. Indeed, Sebastian’s interest in natural medicine started when he was just a teen. His elderly parents (he was born when his mother was 45 years old) taught him, through their examples, the power of nature’s healing, Confucianism, and passion for one’s vocation. Sebastian’s parents – Mr Liew Seng Hwa and Madam Pak Choy Yoke – were Cantonese opera artistes, famed for their art from the 1930s–1970s.  Sebastian was very close to his dad; they often went to yum cha (Cantonese tea drinking) at Chinatown, where Sebastian was exposed to many elderly people. His dad shared with him various anti-ageing principles, such as having a sense of humour and seeing the funny side of life, lots of walking, Chinese bolay tea, and tonic herbs.

He once asked Sebastian to guess the age of an old, but strong, man who was smoking a cigar. He guessed that the man was in his sixties. This man was actually 92 years old! Then Sebastian’s father asked the man, “What are the secrets to your long and healthy life, despite your smoking habit?” Moderation in eating and simple living was the answer. Since that encounter, Sebastian has taken a deep interest in natural anti-ageing practices and medicine.

After graduating from the Singapore Polytechnic with a diploma in Engineering, Sebastian initially pursued a corporate career in various multinational companies. Despite his relatively successful corporate career in engineering and marketing, Sebastian felt a deep sense of discontentment. He started to seek for his true vocation in life.

As a result, Sebastian started to take courses in holistic therapies such as massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, and nutrition. He believed that life was about more than just eating, sleeping, getting married, having children, and then dying.

When Sebastian watched her mum take her last breath and die peacefully in his arms, he was convinced of the value of holistic/natural medicine. Thereafter, a spiritual transformation that occurred at an organic farm in the 1990s finally brought Sebastian onto a road less travelled – the vocation to heal others. Since his epiphany, Sebastian has been devoted to his phytotherapy practice and has mentored many to true health.
